Gastineau, June 2015"--page 4.; Historical notes -- Provenance -- Scope and content -- Folder list.; A finding aid prepared to accompany the Catharine Garvin collection of Civil War era documents related to the search for her son, Cornelius Garvin, held in the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection at Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Ind.; In the summer of 1863, Cornelius Garvin (b. 1845), a resident of the Rensselaer County Almshouse, was sold as a substitute into the Union army but the home's superintendent. Cornelius was mentally disabled and had been placed in the almshouse by his mother, Catharine Garvin (d. about 1896) when she could no longer care for him. After she discovered him missing in September 1863 she began a search which resulted in an official army investigation but never found him or learned his fate.
