Wenie's Company (E) Fourth Regiment United States Veteran Volunteers ... is hereby discharged from the service of the United States, this first day of February, 1866, at Camp Chase near Columbus, O. by reason of [expiration] of term of service. Said William H. Maxwell was born in Ulster County in the state of New York, is twenty-seven years of age, ... red hair, and by occupation, when enrolled, a clerk. ...." Signed by Louis [Lehrmann?], Lieut V.R.C. and asst., commanding the reg't., mustering officer Dept of Ohio.; William H. Maxwell was born in Ulster County, New York in approximately 1839 and died in New York city after 1910. He was an examiner and appraiser of merchandise at the New York Custom House under President Arthur and also served as postmaster for Saugerties, New York during President Grant's first term. He served for three years during the Civil War in 6th Corps, Co., C, 65th New York Volunteers and Battery C, 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery. He served one year (1865-1866) in Co. E, 4th U.S. Veteran Volunteers, Hancock's Corps.
