Description

This is a drawing of the railroad car known as the Lincoln funeral car because it was used to transport President Abraham Lincoln's body from Washington, D.C., to Springfield, Illinois, where he was buried. The car is shown draped in black mourning cloth and resting on the train tracks. The presidential seal is shown mounted just below the windows near the midpoint of the car. A five-line rectangular border surrounds the drawing. A February 9, 1864, photograph of President Lincoln cut into an oval shape is pasted in the upper left corner. The artist's signed his drawing in black ink in the lower right corner: "Nathan Clark Pritchard, Co. I, 14th Maine Reg. Vol. Inf." The caption is handwritten in the lower margin: "Car constructed for President Lincoln and his Cabinet, later it became the funeral car of the President, April 21st, 1865."
