Description

This woodcut engraving done from a sketch by W. Waud features the scene at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois, where President Abraham Lincoln and his son Willie were entombed in a receiving vault on May 4, 1865. The vault was at the base of a hill. Great numbers of spectators are shown standing on the hillside with a wooded area in the background. The honor guard is shown carrying the casket from the catafalque into the receiving vault thus ending the 16 day-long funeral. Lincoln's funeral train had traveled a distance of 1,662 miles from Washington, D.C. to Springfield, Illinois. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
