Description

Framed collage of gloves, ribbon, and button worn at Abraham Lincoln's funeral is mounted on blue paper. White cotton gloves with elastic wrists are tacked to the backing paper with sewing pins. Tacked between the gloves is a white silk ribbon with black text that reads: "We mourn the nation's loss. Abraham Lincoln. April 15, 1865." A gold button with an embossed eagle and pin backing is tucked inside a strip of blue paper that is glued across the frame glass at the bottom of the collage. The head of the button is taped down to the glass. A piece of white paper is taped to the proper right bottom corner of the glass. The following is handwritten in blue ink: "These are the gloves, badge and a button from his coat, worn by Elijah Mosher when he had the honor to be chosen as a body guard at the funeral of Abraham Lincoln, April 15, 1865 at Springfield." A paper label is adhered to the top proper left corner of the glass and reads "70." "Company H, 146 Illinois Volunteers" is handwritten in pencil on the back of the frame. The frame is painted olive green and features a triangular design throughout. Part of The Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
