Description

This postcard features a photograph of the train car used to carry President Abraham Lincoln's body from Washington, D. C., to Springfield, Illinois, for burial. Originally built for the president to use, it was quickly turned into a funeral car when President Lincoln was assassinated and then died on April 15, 1865. Myron H. Lamson served as the assistant foreman during the construction of this car and the remodeling to receive the President's remains. The photograph of the funeral car remained in the Lamson family for 43 years. The caption is enclosed in a decorative border near the top right corner. A head and shoulders portrait of President Lincoln is inset in the upper left corner. The postcard reverse is divided. Narrative text is printed on the left side.
