Description

This painting is a collage of photographs, illustrations, and drawings of or related to Abraham Lincoln. It includes the 1861 facade of the dome of the Capitol Building under construction, the Lincoln birthplace cabin, the 1862 visit of President Lincoln to General McClellan at Antietam, portraits of Lincoln, Union generals, statesmen, and John Wilkes Booth, and a Lincoln funeral procession among other images. The painting incorporates the names "Abe" and "Lincoln" and the stars and stripes of the American flag. The handwritten text of President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address appears in the viewer's upper left corner, and the handwritten quotation of Lincoln's definition of democracy appears near the lower edge of the painting near the center.
