Description

This lithograph depicts the funeral procession transporting President Abraham Lincoln's casket from the Statehouse to the train depot in Columbus, Ohio, on April 29, 1865. The Statehouse, draped in mourning cloth and with both flags at half mast, is to the viewer's left in the image. Other buildings surround the Capitol Square with crowds of people standing at the fence. Soldiers line both sides of the walkway leading from the Statehouse across the Square and out to the street. The catafalque drawn by six white horses is surrounded by the honor guard in the foreground. The procession is led by soldiers on horseback as well as on foot. Dignitaries riding in carriages follow behind the catafalque. Columbus, Ohio, was one of the twelve stops the Lincoln funeral train made along the route from Washington, D.C., to Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
