Description

This woodcut engraving showing the funeral procession for President Abraham Lincoln in New York City was published in the May 13, 1865, issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. The engraving was done from "a number of sketches taken at different points by our Special Artists." The image shows the catafalque bearing President Lincoln's casket being pulled by 16 horses and surrounded by an honor guard of soldiers traveling up Broadway on April 25, 1865, "in the presence of nearly a million spectators." Buildings on both sides of the street are draped in black mourning cloth and most have American flags on the rooftops. New York City was one of the twelve stops the Lincoln funeral train made along the route from Washington, D.C., to Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
