Description
This woodcut engraving done from a Brady photograph was published in the May 13, 1865, issue of Harper's Weekly. It shows the funeral procession taking President Abraham Lincoln's casket from City Hall where the public viewing was held on April 24, 1865, to the train depot. The catafalque bearing Lincoln's coffin and pulled by 16 horses is seen in the middle of the image and to the viewer's right. An honor guard of soldiers can be seen walking in the foreground. A portion of the thousands of people lining the streets can be seen in the background of the image just in front of the buildings draped in black mourning cloth. New York City was one of the twelve stops the Lincoln funeral train made along the route from Washington, D.C., to Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
