Description

This oval photograph depicts a scene from President Abraham Lincoln's funeral in Indianapolis, Indiana. A platform is draped with black cloth, two American flags, and evergreen garland in front of the first Indiana State House to the left front of the photograph. Men line up horizontally in the dirt street, some wearing Civil War military uniforms. Garland decorating the white picket fence on the far right has been hand painted green. The photograph is mounted on decorative board with an oval outline. The photographer's name has been embossed on the board: "T.J. Davies, Artist, Indianapolis." The frame that holds the photograph features the following plaque, "This picture frame, containing a rare photograph of Lincoln's funeral at Indianapolis, Indiana, April 30, 1865, was made from the bier upon which Lincoln's remains rested. Gift of R.A. Trubey." The donor's father, Corporal Abraham Musser Trubey who was Corporal of the Guard, can be seen in the photograph as the third person from the left. See ID number 71.2009.082.0171 for the flag which covered President Lincoln's casket during the Indianapolis funeral from the same donor.
