He was a physician/surgeon and Civil War Union Army Chaplain. He was mustered in as Chaplain of the 52nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 28, 1861. He served until he resigned due to ill health on August 1, 1862. He served St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Bristol, Pa. for 13 years.; Handwritten in pencil on cover: "with Compliments of JH Drumm."; Penciled typographical corrections on p. 13, 14, and 21.
