Description

White cotton muslin banner features a two inch black velvet mourning border and seven ribbon ties, measuring ten inches, at the top of the banner. The following is painted in black letters within a black box on the front: "Abraham Lincoln, Revered at home, honored abroad: His Name shall be for aye/ A spell to break Oppression's rod,/ And check foul Treason's sway." On the reverse side, in the same black painted lettering is: "Caledonia Div. S. of T. No. 90 Boston. Instituted March 11th. 1859". There are pencil marks on each side where the lettering is located. This banner was used in the Lincoln funeral possession in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1865. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
