Description

This is a lithograph featuring a comical depiction of the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. He is portrayed wearing women's clothing, and holding a dagger for protection as he runs away from Union soldiers who pursue him on horseback. On the bottom of Davis' boot, the words "Blockade Runner" are visible. Behind Davis, his wife shakes a finger at an oncoming soldier, as if scolding him. A horse in the background runs off carrying a large bag labeled "Confederate GOLD". The text below the image reads: "Don't provoke the President, or he may hurt some of you!" / (Title) / "His last official act "The adoption of a new rebel uniform". He attempts to "Clear his skirts", but finds it "All up in Dixie". Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
