Description

This color postcard features the grave of Ann Rutledge (1813-1835) in Oakland Cemetery in Petersburg, Illinois. A poem by Edgar Lee Masters is engraved on the granite monument at the head of the grave. Her name is engraved on the small native stone at the foot of the grave. A fence surrounds the grave and nearby tree. The postcard reverse is divided vertically with narrative text on the left side. A handwritten note in blue ink is signed "Bob" and addressed toAlice O'Reilly of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The postmark is dated 1980. Ann met Abraham Lincoln when he moved to New Salem, Illinois, in 1831. Oral tradition alleges that Abraham and Ann became romantically involved and that he was devastated when she died from typhoid fever.
