Description

This postcard features a photograph of the gravestone placed on the grave of Ann Rutledge (1813-1835) in Oakland Cemetery at Petersburg, Illinois. It is surrounded by tall grasses with trees in the background. A handwritten note in black ink is in the blank space at the right of the image. The note is signed by John Bryant and is addressed to Curtiss A. Bernier of Kankakee, Illinois. The postcard reverse is undivided. Ann met Abraham Lincoln when he moved to New Salem in 1831. Oral tradition alleges that Abraham and Ann became romantically involved and that he was devastated when she died from typhoid fever in August of 1835.
