Description
This is a reprint of a political cartoon published in the Detroit News the week after the 1978 mayoral election. The Lincoln Memorial statue is pictured but a smiling Mayor Coleman Young is depicted seated instead of President Abraham Lincoln. Engraved on the pedestal is the word, "Victory." In front of the pedestal is a desk with "in" and "out" trays; the "in" box is overflowing with papers, while the "out" box has only a fraction of the amount. Behind the memorial is written "With Malice Toward None / With Charity For All." The title, "Altitude," appears in the top margin. The artist's signature is in the bottom left corner of the image. "THU" is handwritten in large print in blue marker next to the statue. In the upper portion of the cartoon, a handwritten ink note is visible from the reverse side.
