Description
This hand-colored woodcut illustration is clipped from "The Soldier in Our Civil War: a Pictorial History of the Conflict, 1861-1865, illustrating the valor of the soldier as displayed on the battle-field, from sketches drawn by Forbes, Waud, Taylor, Beard, Becker, Lovie, Schell, Crane and numerous other eye-witnesses to the strife" written by Frank Leslie, et al, in 1890. This illustration depicts depicts President Abraham Lincoln riding through Richmond on April 4th, 1865, after General Robert E. Lee and his troops had evacuated the city. His carriage is surrounded by African Americans in the front and to the side greeting him. Soldiers are shown opposite and behind the carriage. A building is shown in the background.
