Description

This is a poster featuring a painting that depicts the Battle at Vicksburg, on May 19th, 1863. The painting shows a dynamic start to the battle, with Union soldiers in the background crashing down upon their Confederate opponents in the foreground. The Union soldiers are all young, handsome, and well-dressed in their uniforms. Many of the men are actually smiling as they commence the battle, waving the American flag, and cheering. The Confederate soldiers are all shown with their back to the viewer, and none of their faces are visible. They are wearing humble working clothes, and are huddled close to the ground, preparing for the attack. Below the painting is printed the title, followed by a U.S. Government Seal from the War Office, and a brief text that tells of the bravery and strength of both sides of the battle. At the bottom of the print are notes on instructions for framing. It reads, "This poster is one of a series to be published to dramatize the history of the United States Army from the American Revolution and may be used as a supplement when discussing these accomplishments. It is suitable for framing and preserving for permanent display in day rooms, clubs, and offices of the Army." Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
