Description

This mezzotint composite engraving of a beardless President-elect Abraham Lincoln features the head of Abraham Lincoln engraved on the body of John C. Fremont. Buttre had published an engraving of Fremont in 1859 and decided to reuse the plate by burnishing out Fremont's head to be replaced with Lincoln's head in order to get the print out quickly. Lincoln is shown wearing a dark suit with long tails and positioned standing with one hand on his hip and another resting on a rolled document on a round table draped with a cloth. A globe lamp and books also rest on the table. An ornate chair can be seen behind him to the right. The print is titled along the bottom margin, "Abraham Lincoln." Buttre reused the engraving plate again in 1865 adding a beard to Lincoln's face. See ID number 71.2009.081.0449.
