Description

This is a commemorative lithograph, honoring the generals and statesmen of the Civil War, from both the North and the South. The print features several rows of military men on horseback. In the front and center of the group sit General Grant and General Lee. To the proper right of General Grant are Union soldiers, and to the proper left of General Lee are Confederate soldiers. A forest landscape occupies the background, behind the soldiers. Above them, at the top of the image are ten bust portraits of politicians. Each man is dressed in a black suit and bow tie, and the portraits are enclosed by an ovular frame of laurel. In the center of the portraits, an eagle flies above the Union and Confederate flags, out of which are seen two anonymous hands, one dressed in Union military garb, and the other in Confederate, shaking hands. Each man is designated a small number, which corresponds to a list of numbers and names below the image that indicate who is represented in the print. The Union statesmen shown are Cameron, Stanton, Chase, Seward, and Lincoln. The Confederate statesmen shown are Davis, Stephens, Benjamin, Toombs, and Yancey. Twenty Union generals and twenty Confederate generals are shown on horseback. The title appears at the bottom center, "Prominent Union and Confederate Generals and Statesmen / As they appeared during the Great Civil War, 1861-5." On the reverse side, there are some drawings in pencil.
