Description

This color lithograph depicts a scene from the Battle of Spotsylvania. Union solders carrying an American flag rush from the background into a dirt field where Confederate soldiers are entrenched. The opposing forces battle it out: one soldier holds his sword in the air to signal the charge; bayonets and swords clash throughout; dead and wounded men litter the ground; and clouds of canon smoke fill the sky in the background. "Thulstrup" and "M. Libourel, lith. Sept. -87" is printed in the lower corner. Part of The Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
