Title supplied by cataloger.; Handwritten statement (pencil on lined paper) headed "83 Hamilton [Place] NY April 14th 1910." On the first page Maxwell remembers the events of April 14, 1865 while a member of Company E, 4th US Veteran Volunteers, Hancock's Corps in Washington D.C. His company was under arms and set to guard the ways of escape into Maryland. He remembers seeing and being close to "poor dear Abe" three times. On the verso he relates that the regiment was on guard duty around the Old Capitol Prison in Washington during the trial of the conspirators. After the execution "Co E of which I was one cut the bodies of the Mrs. Surratt, Payne, Herrold & Azerott down."; William H. Maxwell was born in Ulster County, New York in approximately 1839 and died in New York city after 1910. He was an examiner and appraiser of merchandise at the New York Custom House under President Arthur and also served as postmaster for Saugerties, New York during President Grant's first term. He served for three years during the Civil War in 6th Corps, Co. C, 65th New York Volunteers and Battery C, 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery. He served one year (1865-1866) in Co. E, 4th U.S. Veteran Volunteers, Hancock's Corps.
