- Title supplied by cataloger.; Handwritten letter dated "Washington, April 27 1865," addressed to "Henry Liebenau, Esq. New York, N.Y.," and signed "Very truly yours, F.E. Spinner." Spinner responds to a query about a name that "is a bad one in this community." He goes on to mention that "Booth's carcass came here this morning -- The government have near on a hundred supposed Confederates in the conspiracy in safe places."; Francis Elias Spinner (1802-1890) was an American politician from New York. He was Treasurer of the United States from 1861 to 1875. He was the first administrator in the federal government to employ women for clerical jobs. The recipient of the letter is Henry Liebenau (1803-c1889) in New York who worked for the Custom House before the Civil War and as an Inspector of Markets for New York City in 1867.
