Facts about this object

Though this scene shows a young boy in the doorway of the room where Lincoln died, 12-year-old Tad Lincoln was not present at his father’s deathbed.

Robert Todd Lincoln, pictured in uniform at the end of the bed, was present when his father died.

Dozens of prints of Lincoln’s deathbed scene flooded the market following the president’s death. The number and identities of the witnesses pictured varied, with the most elaborate painting showing 47 people at Lincoln’s bedside.
