Description
This composite engraving features the head of President Abraham Lincoln superimposed on the background and the body of an 1852 print of John Calhoun. Lincoln is depicted standing in a formal pose and facing toward the viewer's left with his left hand resting on a table, while his right hand holds a cape over his right shoulder. The table is covered with an over-sized dark cloth. Atop the table are papers upon which are written, "Union" and "Constitution" and "Proclamation of Freedom," as well as a pen, inkwell, and several large books. On the left side of the image, a globe is placed on the ground, in front of a large American flag that drapes to the floor and reaches all the way to the center of the image behind Lincoln.
