Description

This watercolor painting is the artist's idea of a young Abraham Lincoln in his late teens or early twenties taking a break from splitting rails to read a book. Lincoln is shown in a wooded setting standing with his left foot on the ground and his right foot resting on a large log. Lincoln's left hand grips the end of the axe handle with the axe resting on the ground while holding an open book in his right hand. He is depicted wearing a light colored shirt with brown trousers and a black and tan vest. He has a reddish brown hat on his head and almost knee-length black boots on his feet. There is a pile of split rails off to Lincoln's right across the path and a three split rails on the ground next to the log on which Lincoln's foot rests.
