Description
Bronze-painted plaster copy of sulptor Gutzon Borglum's colossal size bronze head of Abraham Lincoln which was cast in the mold from his original. Lincoln is depicted beardless; the subject faces the viewer with his head slightly tipped down. Borglum sculpted the original head of Lincoln, now in the rotunda of the Capitol Building in Washington, D. C., in 1908 as a study for his eventual carving of the four presidential heads on the face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This is the reason the back of the head and the base of the study are unfinished. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
