Description

This mixed media drawing features a head and shoulders portrait of President Abraham Lincoln done after a photograph taken of him on June 3, 1860, in Springfield, Illlinois, not long after he was nominated as the Republican presidential candidate. In the original 1860 photograph Lincoln was beardless. Here, the artist has added a beard. Lincoln is depicted with his head turned toward the viewer's right and wearing a black coatt and white collared shirt. Lincoln's face is colored with a pale shade of pink and his lips are darker shade than the rest of his face. His hair is black, though like his beard there are streaks of white to give the appearance of texture. The background is a pale blue. The artist's signature, "T. Biggerstaff" is written in black ink in the bottom right corner, with the date "9-10-30" below it. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
