Description

This drawing is an original cartoon featuring President Abraham Lincoln looking into a shop window that has a red baseball cap on display. The price tag reads "$5". Lincoln is depicted dressed in his typical black suit, and overcoat with an exaggerated top hat. The red cap is the only color used in the cartoon. The artist signed the cartoon along the left edge, "Shoemaker". "OK HMH" is handwritten in blue colored pencil in the bottom right corner. A piece of paper is taped to the reverse titled "An ORIGINAL Cartoon/Illustration by Cartoonist HOWARD SHOEMAKER" has biographical information about the artist. "Playboy" is stamped in black ink below the paper. A stamp with the artist's studio information, a stamp of the date (Feb 2 2000), and a stamp of a series of numbers--022964. "DO NOT REPRODUCE WITHOUT / WRITTEN PERMISSION OF PLAYBOY MAGAZINE / 680 N. LAKESHORE DRIVE, CHICAGO, IL 60611" is handwritten in red ink. Also handwritten near the date is "(issue) page 147".
