Description

This original sketch features a head and shoulders portrait of a beardless Abraham Lincoln done after a photograph taken of him on October 4, 1859, in Chicago, Illinois. He is depicted facing partially toward the viewer's left wearing a coat, vest, and collared shirt with a black bow tie. The right edge of the paper is deckled and painted red. The following inscription is written just below the left lapel of Lincoln's jacket: A SKETCH BY EARL OWEN FAY MADE ESPECIALLY FOR ROBERT LINCOLN MCFERRAN July 15 1949 Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
