Description

This is a lithograph featuring a dog with the head of Union General George B. McClellan, the Democratic presidential candidate in 1864. The dog stands on a dirt road next to a street sign indicating, "Richmond 10 miles". Further down the road, a playful fox is running along, and even further in the distance a coach is faintly visible. The coach is labeled "Slow Coach / Six Miles A Day!" In the lower margin, the following text appears below the title: " 'If he had not been interfered with'. -- IF THE DOG had not stopped, he would have caught the fox!!! 'Your if is the only Peace-maker; much virtue in if.' Major General Touchstone, in As You Like It, act.V, sc.IV."
