This is the original artwork for a political cartoon published in the February 12, 1954, issue of the Indianapolis Star newspaper. It features a portrait of President Abraham Lincoln floating over the top half of a globe. On the gobe is written, "Our Fight Against World Dictatorships and Communism". A quotation next to Lincoln's head reads, "This government cannot endure half-slave and half-free." Lincoln's face is streaked with horizontal white lines that span nearly the entire width of the image The lines seem to be an unintentional resultt of the printing process. The artist's handwritten signature is in the bottom right corner of the drawing. The caption handwritten in pencil in the top margin reads, "His Truth Goes Marching On." "Fri." is handwritten in pencil in the upper right corner of the margin. "57 1/2" is handwritten in pencil in the lower left corner. "12 Feb '54" is handwritten on the reverse along the right edge.. Also on the reverse is a star stamped in red ink with a black checkmark on it. Charles George Werner (March 23, 1909 – July 1, 1997) was an American editorial cartoonist who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1939 and later worked 47 years for the Indianapolis Star.
