Description
This drawing is a political cartoon featuring President Abraham Lincoln and Soviet foreign minister, Molotov. Molotov is depicted seated at a table, clenching a paper in his hand titled "Austrian Treaty." Next to the table is a waste basket that is filled with papers, one of which reads "United Germany." President Lincoln is lightly sketched standing at the corner of the table, supporting himself on the tabletop with his right hand. He looks down at Molotov, frowning. The Austrian Treaty was signed the following year on May 15, 1955, re-establishing the independence of Austria. The title, handwritten in pencil in the lower margin, is part of a quotation from President Lincoln's definition of democracy. "Fri. - Feb-12-1954 ----News.---- By 9 P.M." is handwritten in pencil in the top margin. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
