Description
This drawing is a political cartoon that depicts Abraham Lincoln seated with a balance scale. One side of the scale has a piece of paper reading "More Bombing" and the other side holds a piece of paper reading "Stop Bombing." The scale shows that the two are of equal weight. Lincoln is seated with one leg crossed over the other and resting his head in his hand. He faces the viewer directly, but looks downward onto the scale. In his right hand he holds a pen and a paper with the following quotation: "The subject is difficult and good men do not agree. . . - A. Lincoln". This is a quotation from a speech he gave in response to a delegation from Chicago visiting him in Washington, D. C., on September 13, 1862. The artist's name is signed below the cartoon along with the year. "557" is handwritten in the bottom right corner. The title is written twice in the upper margin. There is also a third writing of the title in the upper margin, and though it is now covered by a piece of tape, the text is still legible.
