Description
This drawing is a political cartoon featuring President Abraham Lincoln attempting to perform a magic trick. Lincoln, dressed in a black suit and bow tie, has his top hat removed and holds it upside down in front of him with his left hand. He holds a wand in his right hand. Out of the hat fly two birds--one, a white dove representing peace; and the other an eagle representing war--both carrying miniature American flags in their mouths. Lincoln looks at the dark bird in disbelief as it flies away. The cartoon represents the conflicting opinions among United States citizens concerning participation in the Vietnam War. The artist's signature and the date are handwritten below Lincoln's left arm. The title is handwritten in blue pencil in the top margin. "Monday, Feb. 12, 1968" is handwritten in blue pencil in the upper proper left corner. . Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
