Description
This is an original drawing for a political cartoon published in the Fort Wayne, Indiana, News-Sentinel newspaper. It depicts a beardless Abraham Lincoln standing on a stage, with a sign pinned on a tree directly behind him reading, "Issues Squarely Met--Lincoln-Douglas Debates." Surrounding Lincoln are other men, presumably politicians, who are only sketched in outline, but are lacking the detail with which Lincoln is portrayed. They are partially transparent, as if to show their presence only in spirit and not in flesh and blood. A piece of paper lying on the stage reads, "Today's Ghost Candidates and Ghost Speeches." The title is in the upper margin, above the image. Sandesson's signature is below, in the bottom proper right corner. Handwritten in the lower margin is "5 7/8" Mon. N-S. Ed. Cartoon" in pencil.
