Description

This is a lithograph featuring a political cartoon that criticizes the secession movement by the Southern States. The main character, a hen, represents the Union, and comments on the trouble-making "secession ducks" that swim in Salt River nearby. The hen guards her chicks who come to eat from a bowl labeled, "U.S. Treasury". A threatening hawk flies over the ducks that bears the label, "Anarchy". The title appears in the bottom margin. "Strong's Dime Caricatures.-No.1" is printed in the top margin. "Set 4 500" is handwritten in pencil in the bottom proper left corner. For more information on this political cartoon series, see "Lincoln Lore" number 1691, January, 1979, pages 3-4.
