Description

This original drawing is a political cartoon that is divided into two parts diagonally. In the upper left half President Abraham Lincoln is depicted in his office. He sits in his chair, with pen in hand, and smiles. Visible in the office are a warm stove with a coffee pot on top, piles of wood, and a window with snow piling up on the panes. At the top of this half is written "Old Abe's Warm Office, 1860." The lower right half shows a 20th-century office with a man dressed in layers of sweaters and jackets shivering with cold at his desk. His breath is visible in the air, and he looks across his office towards a thermometer that reflects the cold temperature. The office is entirely barren save the thermometer, and a window with snow accumulating on its panes. "Fuel Shortages, 1975" is written below the thermometer. The artist's handwritten signature and the date are in the bottom left corner of the drawing. "64.5" is handwritten in pencil in the bottom right corner of the margin. The title is handwritten in blue pencil in the top margin. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
