Description

This drawing is a political cartoon that is divided into two halves, separated by a diagonal line. In the top half President Abraham Lincoln is depicted seated in his warm office reading a document. A warm stove with a hot coffee pot on top and a window with snow piling up on the pane are visible around him. At the top of this half is written "Old Abe's Warm Office, 1860." The lower half titled "Fuel Allotted Office, 1975, shows a 20th-century office with a man dressed in layers of sweaters and jackets shivering with cold at his desk. His breath is visible in the air, and he looks across his office towards a thermometer with icicles hanging from it. A window with snow accumulating on its panesis behind him. This is the same composition as another cartoon with the same title, ID# 71.2009.081.0653, although there are differences in the expressions of the characters.
