Description

This drawing is a political cartoon by Howard Shoemaker. A man is depicted in a plaid shirt, jeans, and sturdy work boots holding a chainsaw. He is looking down at the cut end of the felled tree which has a copper-colored image of a Lincoln penny on it. Sparks of copper are scattered on the ground. The red chainsaw and copper-colored interior of the tree are the only areas of color within the black and white image. On the reverse side of the posterboard "DETAILS ON DRAWING'S REVERSE" is handwritten in black ink. On the reverse side of the print there is copyright information both handwritten, and stamped. There is also a small square of paper that has been glued to the print which provides more information about the artist. See ID numbers 71.2009.081.0628 and .0629 for two more original cartoons drawn by Howard Shoemaker. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
