Description

This is an engraving for Vanity Fair. It features two white men, one overweight and standing up, and the other thin and seated on a bale of cotton. They have smug looks on their faces. Behind them is a black man, presumably a slave, that is stuck in one of the bales of cotton, with his head and limbs protruding out. he tries to flail his arms and legs looks for help. A sign in the background reads "Jeff Davis Cotton Broker". Below the title is this text: "Mr. Bull--My Colored Brother, don't be irrepressible--the unhappy condition to which the opressor has reduced you, enlists my warmest sympathy--but, then, really, one cannot know friends in trade."
