Description

This miniature portrait in watercolor on ivory of President Abraham Lincoln appears to have been done after the Lincoln portrait by Wiliam Edgar Marshall. Lincoln is shown wearing a black frock coat and bow tie and is facing toward the viewer's right. The background is a light gray-green fading to a very light gray above the image. The artist's signature is near Lincoln's left shoulder. The painting is enclosed in a gold and black thin rectangular frame which measures 3-5/8 inches by 2-7/8 inches. The framed miniature is encased in black velvet in a larger decorative composition case. A gold-colored decorative border surrounds the black velvet. On the opposite side of the interior of the case is red velvet with the embossed logo of the Capitol Gallery in the center A decorative gold-colored border is printed on the inside edges of the composition case. The exterior front and back of the case are embossed with a floral design. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
