Description

This is a cartridge box that is attached to an ammunition belt (71.2009.082.0501a). It is attached by two leather belt loops attached to the back of the box. The box is square in shape and made out of brown leather. The lid consists of a leather flap that starts at the top and covers entire front of the box, and closes with a metal hook on the bottom of the box. On the front of the box lid the letters "US" are printed, and surrounded with an oval, similar to the lettering on the belt buckle on 71.2009.082.0501a. On the inside of the box, there is a leather pocket with a leather flap lid and closure. There are also two metal boxes, that are divided in each center, to make four compartments total, on the inside of the cartridge box. These metal boxes were probably used to store ammunition and may or may not be removable. This item is part of a small collection of 19th century military items originally belonging to George W. Dick of the 195th Ohio Infantry. Photographs of him and some of his military documents from this collection are housed at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
