Description

This metal sign was an advertisement for Exemplar cigars produced by the G. J. Johnson Cigar Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan. It features a very large head and shoulders portrait of President Abraham Lincoln engraved by William E. Marshall in a black oval frame. The background of the rest of the sign is gold-colored with black printing. Above the portrait is the name of the product in dark gray lettering outlined in black. Below the name is the phrase "The Ideal 5¢ cigar" split between the two sides of the oval frame. Below the portrait is a black banner with a quotation from President Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address in gold-colored ink. Each end of the black banner is wrapped around an olive branch. Along the bottom edge is the company name and location. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
