Description
a) This is a Hagner ammunition belt, from around 1873. It is made of brown leather and has 12 belt holes for adjusting the size. There is a metal belt buckle and clasp for closure at the center front. The buckle had the letters "US" on it, surrounded by an oval. b) Attached to the belt is a cap box. This box is made out of the same leather as the belt, and is 3 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide. The cap box is rounded at the bottom, and square at the top. The lid consists of a flap of leather that comes down from the top and attaches to a metal hook at the bottom. There is also a smaller leather flap, inside the lid, for extra protection of the objects contained in the box. The box is attached to the belt through belt loops on the back of the box. *A cartridge box is also attached to the belt, see record 71.2009.082.0501c. These items are part of a small collection of 19th century military items originally belonging to George W. Dick of the 195th Ohio Infantry. Photographs of him and some of his military documents from this collection are housed at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
