Description
This double-page print is a reproduction by an Indianapolis, Indiana, engraving company of a souvenir originally printed by The Daily Dispatch, Montgomery, Alabama, on April 28, 1886, on the occasion of the laying of the corner stone of the Confederate Monument by Honorable Jefferson Davis. A color illustration in the center includes an engraving of the first capitol building of the Confederate states below which is a stand of Confederate flags with poles crossed and overlaid with the seal of the Confederate States of America. To the viewer's left of the illustration is an article describing the ceremony in Montgomery and giving the text of the speech given there by Mr. Davis. Below the illustration are short articles containing quotations from speeches given by Mr. Davis and others in various towns in Georgia. To the viewer's right of the illustration are articles about the survival of the Lost Cause, honoring the Confederate soldiers, and giving the text of Abraham Lincoln's speech at the dedication of the National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. A wide decorative red border surrounds the entire souvenir page. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
