Bradner, Asst Surgeon in charge who certifies "that the Whisky called for is for the Regiment on picket at the front for men on guard at night to protect them against the exposure and damps of night in accordance with the Gen. Orders No. 108 authorizing the issue of Whisky in prophylactic doses." Also signed by "Rockwell Tyler, Lieut. Col. Commanding." An undated statement acknowledging receipt is written at the bottom and signed by "1st Lieut Norman Perkins, A.Q.M. 56th N.Y.V." Docketed on verso and signed "Head Qts U.S. Forces, Morris Island S Sept 20, 1864 Respectfully forwarded & approved. C.H. Van Wyck, Col. 56th NYV" and then "Respectfully returned disapproved. Whisky will not be issued except as it may be considered necessary from day to day. By order of Brig. Gen R. Saxton, W.B. Dean, Lt 127 NYV, AAAG."; The 56th New York Infantry regiment, recruited by Col. Charles H. Van Wyck, received its numerical designation and was organized October 15, 1861, at Newburgh, New York, and there mustered in to the service of the United States for three years October 28, 1861. The regiment served in Saxton's Division and in September of 1864 was posted at Morris Island, S.C.
