Description

This postcard is a photograph of an original painting by artist J. L. G. Ferris titled Lincoln and the Contrabands. President Abraham Lincoln is depicted with his left hand on the shoulder of a young African American child. A group of Contrabands, as escaped slaves were called, were being held back by a Union soldier while an African American woman, holding the child with another older child holding onto her apron, speaks with the president. Two other women in fancier dresses are behind the president. The postcard reverse is divided. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
