Description

This color postcard is a reproduction of a drawing by Jack Clifton depicting President Abraham Lincoln's visit to Fort Monroe in May of 1862 when he helped to plan the attack of Norfolk, Virginia, by Union troops. President Lincoln is accompanied by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, Secretary of the Treasury Salmon Chase, and Major General Wool. Major General George McClellan is depicted on horseback. Chesapeake Bay can be seen in the background. The postcard reverse is divided and has narrative text printed on the left side. Also on the left side is a handwritten note in blue ink from Chester D. Bradley to Gerald McMurtry of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Newport News, Virginia, postmark is dated August 7, 1957.
